It seems to me, & a lot of others, that neither political party deserves to win. The Democrats ducked their responsibility at the moment of decision to begin the disastrous Iraq invasion, & have not demanded oversight ever since, & haven't proposed anything marvellous for the future. The Republican party let itself be kidnapped by kids, neo-con kids, who ruined the party, soiled the good reputation of the USA, made the world a dangerous planet (terror-wise & climate-control-wise) & their Congressmen didn't all behave responsibly. It seems power really does corrupt. Though neither party deserves to win, most people I speak to & the polls show that the Republican neo-con kiddies must be spanked. They've betrayed the trust of their party, their public & the faith of the world. It seems a pity to punish the entire Republican Party for the sins of a handful of irresponsible kids, but since they hold the levers of power, there seems little choice. They've committed too many unforgivable sins. One can hope for gridlock, a Congress fairly evenly balanced/divided so that no stupid policies will prevail. As Will Rogers said long ago, the US is safest when Congress is in recess. The current Congress session has accomplished little & overlooked a lot of sin, from torture (anywhere, to anyone) to fraud & Foleyism & lobbyism, in its own ranks. One can thus hope the next Congress will learn from the likely mega-spanking I anticipate on Nov 7, & behave a lot better. With the BIG election coming up in 08, U can be sure the US public will be watching the new Congress with more care than in the past 5 years. By the way, the media was also guilty, along with the Democrats, for rubber stamping everything Bush & the kiddies did in the run up to the 2 wars & thereafter, for a long time. I chronicled this in HSL, noting how none had backbones, or even curiosity, for ages. Finally, as I also reported, backbones started to appear, & now most media are awake, watchful & critical. Better late than never? No, not good enough. Great damage has been done. They were too late to snap out of their rubberstamp sleep. The Democrats, seeing the earlier media approval, were thus even more reluctant to ask questions or challenge the neocon kids. And of course the Republicans were in no mood to rock the boat their party controlled. Gradually, power corrupts. Always does. Since writing the above, I saw CNN's rerun of their rather daring series on US "Broken Government." They pointed out flaws in both parties & all recent govts, noting that the Bush govt has gone to power-grabbing extremes beyond others. But, the problem goes further than flawed priorities & policies now because Bush&kids have changed all the laws! Homeland Security & the Patriot Act must be un-done & redone. Recent presidential powers to invoke Martial Law at will, impose torture, withhold Habeas Corpus must be revoked. Americans now are devoid of civil rights. Even the right to travel without permission is now being attempted into law. Internal passports are planned. ID cards are underway, forced through. It's up to the public, the last hope, to deconstruct, salvage & rebuild. Congress & the WhiteHouse have messed up & won't repair unless the public gets active, makes demands----with the spirit it hasn't had since 1776. We'll see if, on Nov 7, Americans take one tiny step to begin reconstruction via rebalancing in Congress - where some real back bone is required. UH
